How to read a research peptide Certificate of Analysis.

A Certificate of Analysis is most useful when it can be traced to the exact material being evaluated. This guide explains the fields to check and the limits of what a COA can establish.

Start with identity and batch

Check the product name, any catalogue identifier, batch or lot number and the vial strength if it is part of the report. These details should correspond with the product page and, where applicable, the label on the supplied vial.

If the document cannot be connected to the selected variant, treat it as background information rather than evidence for that exact item.

Read the analytical method correctly

HPLC is commonly used to separate components and estimate chromatographic purity. Mass spectrometry can support identity by comparing the observed mass with the expected compound. These methods answer different questions and the report should state what was actually performed.

A percentage without a named method, chromatogram or identifiable report context is less informative than a complete analytical record.

Check dates and document provenance

Look for the analysis date, report or sample identifier and the name of the issuing laboratory or document source. Dates help establish whether the record belongs to a current batch rather than an unrelated historical example.

The supplier should avoid editing analytical results, batch identifiers or signatures when presenting a laboratory report. Branding around the document must not change the underlying evidence.

Match strength and product form

A report for one vial strength should not automatically be applied to another. Also confirm whether the material is a peptide, a combination, a biochemical or a laboratory support product, because the relevant specifications can differ.

For combination products, each named component and stated amount should be represented consistently across the product page, label and available documentation.

Recognise common red flags

Be cautious when a document lacks product identity, batch reference, date or source; when the strength differs from the product offered; or when a supplier labels a sample certificate as if it were batch-specific.

  • Unrelated product or vial strength
  • Missing batch or report identifier
  • No analytical method stated
  • Cropped results without document context
  • Claims on the product page that exceed the report
  • Broken or inaccessible document links

Use the COA with other records

A COA does not replace company verification, storage information, order records or shipping controls. It belongs in a wider documentation chain that connects the supplier, exact product variant, batch and transaction.

What does HPLC purity mean?

It generally describes the relative area of the target peak in a chromatographic analysis. Interpretation depends on the method and report context; it is not by itself a complete identity or suitability assessment.

Can one COA cover every vial strength?

Do not assume so. Check whether the report explicitly corresponds to the strength and batch being offered.
